The Yellowknife Climbing Club formed as a non-for-profit society in 2009.
Ongoing training and opportunities are the priority of our club.
Over the past 3 years, club members have created a community in YK to share climbing skills and knowledge, have prepared numerous outdoor routes in the YK area and have pursued the organization of an indoor climbing center for Yellowknife.
During 2012, the YKCC presented the Reel Rock Film Tour, partnered with YK Search and Rescue for a three evening workshop on ‘Knots, Lashings, and Mechanical Advantage Systems’, and offered an ‘Introduction to Ropes and Anchors’ lesson inside the Buffalo Airways Hanger. Outdoor activities began in March with a gathering for winter slack lining, lessons in ‘Rappelling Basics’, and training for ‘On Rope -Companion Rescue Techniques’.
Members were also sponsored through YK Search and Rescue for a 3 day ‘Wilderness First Aid’ course taught by Arctic Response in February.
As the outdoor climbing season blossoms this year, club events will include: an ‘Introduction to Outdoor Climbing’, outdoor ‘Anchor Setting’, exploration / preparation of new routes, and continued opportunities for group climbing activities.
Please visit our website, Facebook page, or join us on our listserv for updated details on events.
Future ambitions of the club include: outdoor summer programs offered to youth organizations, national & international climbing trips, a full size indoor climbing facility, an indoor competitive climbing team (to compete locally, regionally, nationally and internationally), and outdoor winter ice climbing.
Community sponsorships have made many of our pursuits possible. We would like to thank the City of Yellowknife and the Yellowknife Community Foundation for their financial support. As well as the numerous members and supporters that have helped build the climbing community that now exists in Yellowknife.
We truly look forward to sharing the joy of climbing with you! For further information, please contact info@ykclimbingclub.com
